Described as one of American poetry's longtime masters of the art, Philip Schultz is a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and the founder/director of The Writers Studio, a private school for fiction and poetry writing based in New York City. He is the author of several collections of poetry, including Failure (Harcourt, 2007), winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize.

Novelist Zadie Smith was born in North London in 1975 to an English father and a Jamaican mother. She read English at Cambridge, graduating in 1997.
Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County is pleased to announce that tickets are on sale for its second annual Cocktails in Character fundraiser. This unique event will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 5:30–8:30 p.m. in the grand lobby of Shea’s Performing Arts Center. Guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite book character, but are welcome to come as they are, or in cocktail attire. Costumed actors portraying literary characters from classic books will interact with guests during the evening.
Journey’s End Refugee Services is hosting Buffalo Through Their Eyes, a photo exposition, on Thursday, October 6 in the lower lobby of the Tri-Main Center (2495 Main Street, Buffalo, NY). The show will feature the photographs of up to 15 refugee artists documenting their lives including their families, schools, workplaces, and community.
The project includes training from CEPA in framing and shooting photographs, with bi-weekly discussion and critique of the artists’ work in the months leading up to the show.
As the Buffalo Philharmonic successfully completes its historic milestone of 75 years of music-making, we owe a debt of gratitude to all that came before us…our founders, patrons, musicians and staff.
