Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo - A community gardening program

Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo - a community gardening program

Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo is an independent 501©3 located in Buffalo, NY.  Right now we facilitate 60 community gardens in the City of Buffalo.  This initiative is an effort to promote sustainability on multiple levels.

Community gardens provide numerous benefits, from greening neighborhoods through the planting of flowers, shrubs and trees, to providing fresh produce to residents who otherwise may not have access to healthy food.  When we experience periods of drought, having a rain barrel in the garden will provide needed water to sustain plants, and keeping our community gardens functioning.

Other important benefits of community gardens include educational opportunities, such as horticulture, urban agriculture, nutrition and health; community gardens also foster neighborhood revitalization, building civic pride and rebuilding a sense of community in some of the city’s most disenfranchised neighborhoods.  Community gardens offer urban residents opportunities to connect to the land and engage in physical activity – both of which are important for residents in urban settings where open space is often limited.  Community gardens beautify and strengthen Buffalo’s neighborhoods, enable the productive use of vacant properties, and improve the overall quality of life for all residents.

Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo is a community gardening program in Western New York working with public and private sectors to revitalize neighborhoods and build quality of life through the reuse and beautification of vacant land. An independent 501(c)3 organization, Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo (GGB) functions largely as a the liaison organization between the City of Buffalo administration and our city’s enthusiastic community gardeners. Primarily, GGB establishes leases with the city and indemnifies the properties, enabling gardeners to take on the challenges of establishing and maintaining the gardens without the added burden of liability for gardeners and visitors. In addtion, whenever possible, GGB assists the gardeners’ efforts through modest financial support and other resources including the distribution of plants, seeds and bulbs and other supplies.

Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo was started in 1992 by J. Milton Zeckhauser, a lifelong Buffalo resident and businessman who recognized the value that community gardens could bring to Buffalo’s urban neighborhoods. What began as just a few gardens has blossomed into over 50 community gardens throughout the city.
