Old Fort Niagara will host a special Symposium entitled 1812: A War of Many Faces on June 10-12, 2011. The three-day event, underwritten by the New York Council for the Humanities, will bring six top scholars to Niagara County for a series of presentations about the people who were touched by the conflict.

Included at the podium will be author, storyteller and artist Darren Bonaparte and authors Donald R. Hickey, Ph.D., Dr. William S. Dudley, Donald Graves, Dianne Graves, and Major John Grodzinski, Ph.D. Speakers will examine the experiences of soldiers and sailors from both sides of the war, as well as the struggle's impact on women and Native Americans.

The conference will lead off with a Friday night reception at Old Fort Niagara. Lectures will take place throughout the day on Saturday in the Village of Youngstown. The conference will conclude with a special walking tour of the Fort called “Bayonets Before Daybreak” on Sunday morning.

Lectures are free and open to the public but all participants must register by June 1 by calling (716) 745-7611 ext 230. A meal plan including the Friday evening reception, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday is available for $65.00. Friday reception, breakfast, and lunch only is $25.00.

Darren Bonaparte
Topic: First Nations Involvement in the War of 1812

Darren Bonaparte is a writer, artist and storyteller from the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory. He is the author of two books and many articles including Creation and Confederation and A Lilly Among the Thorns: The Repatriation of Kateri Tekakwitha. Mr. Bonaparte is the creator of The Wampum Chronicles: Mohawk Territory on the Internet. www.wampumchronicles.com. He worked as a cultural consultant on the recent documentary "The War that Made America" and was profiled on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN).

Dr. William S. Dudley
Topic: Naval Personnel in the War of 1812

Dr. Dudley is the leading scholar of naval history concerning the War of 1812. Prior to his retirement in 2004, Dr. Dudley served for 27 years as a historian at the Naval History Center, Washington, D.C.; for the last nine years as Director of Naval History. While working at the Naval History Center, Dr. Dudley served as editor of the series Naval Documents of the American Revolution. He later initiated a similar series about the War of 1812- The 3-volume Naval War of 1812: A Documentary History. Dr. Dudley has been the recipient of many awards including the U.S. Navy's Superior Civilian Service Award and the National Trust for Historic Preservation's President's Award. Dr. Dudley is currently Director of the Annapolis Maritime Museum. His most recent work, released by Johns Hopkins University in 2010 is Maritime Maryland: A History.

Donald Graves
Topic: U.S. Forces in the War of 1812

Donald Graves is a writer and historian who specializes in Canadian Military History. Mr. Graves has worked as a historian for both the National Historic Sites Service and the National Archives of Canada. Currently he is the Managing Director of the Ensign Heritage Group, an organization dedicated to offering historic consultation. Mr. Graves has written or edited more than 20 books about military history. His works include Fields of Glory: the Battle of Cryslers Farm, 1813; Where Right and Glory Lead! The Battle of Lundy's Lane, 1814; Redcoats and Grey Jackets: The Battle of Chippawa, 1814; and Guns Across the River: The Battle of the Windmill, 1838.

Dianne Graves 
Topic: Women in the War of 1812

Dianne Graves has worked in international education, travel and public relations. She is the author of two books about Canadian History Crown of Life: the World of John McCrea and In the Midst of Alarms: The Untold Story of Women in the War of 1812. She is a member of the Ensign Heritage Group.

Major John Grodzinski, Ph.D.
Topic: British and Canadian Forces in the War of 1812

Dr. John Grodzinski is a Major in the Canadian Armed Forces. Major Grodzinski is currently a professor at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. his field of expertise is Canadian Military History specifically Canadian and British forces during the War of 1812. Major Grodzinski's The War of 1812: An Annotated Bibliography is a valuable resource to anyone researching the War of 1812.

Donald R. Hickey, Ph.D.
Topic: U.S. Politics During the War of 1812

Dr. Donald Hickey is Professor of History at Wayne State College. His professional achievements include six books, well over a hundred articles, papers and reviews. His major area of concentration is U.S. history during the Federalist Period. Dr. Hickey has been recognized for his scholarship on numerous occasions including awards from the National Historical Society (Best Book Award for The War of 1812), U. S. Army Command and General Staff College (Commander's Award for Public Service) and the American Military Institute (Best Book- The War of 1812). His books focusing on the War of 1812 are: The War of 1812, A Forgotten Conflict, The War of 1812: A Short History, Don't Give Up the Ship: Myths of the War of 1812 and The War of 1812 in the Chesapeake, A Guide to Historic Sites in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
